The Spine and Low Impact Exercise

Low-impact exercise generally refers to activities that involve large muscle groups and continuous rhythmic activity with at least one foot on the floor at all times. This style of exercise reduces the impact stress or shock placed upon weight bearing joints of the lower extremities and the spine. This form of exercise reduces the risk for injury associated with high impact activities and exercise.

Most low-impact exercise include controlled arm and leg movements as well as recruitment of core muscles around the abdomen and low back. Low back and pelvic stabilization is required to perform weight-bearing low impact exercises.  Low impact exercises include:

Walking
Bicycling
Swimming
Rowing
Cross country skiing
Water aerobics/exercise
Stair stepping
